2013/14 Turkish Super Lig Review

Turkish SPOR-Liga

Off field issues once again had the headlines before a ball was kicked in the Turkish league this season. Fenerbache had been banned from all European competition for alleged corruption and match fixing, as well as Sivasspor, who had a ban in place if they did qualify, which in the end they did. Financial problems were experienced by several too, with Kasimpasa, Gaziantepspor, Konyaspor and Eskisehirspor all not issued licences to play European football.

Champions – Fenerbache

2nd – Galatasaray, 3rd – Besiktas (Both CL)

4th – Trabzonspor (EL), 5th Sivasspor, 6th – Kasimpasa (Both unable to go into EL)

7th/8th – Karabukspor + Bursaspor (EL)

Relegated – Antalyaspor, Kayerispor, Elazigspor

Promoted – Mersin, Istanbul BB, Balikersirspor

Fenerbache won the league with ease, with Galatasaray having performance problems all season, which is unheard of for them. They finished 2nd, but miles off Fener. Besiktas finished 3rd, benefiting from Fenerbache’s Euro ban, making it into the Champions League qualifying rounds. Trabzonspor finished 4th and are in the Europa League along with 7th and 8th placed sides Karabukspor and Bursaspor. 5th and 6th place went to teams either banned or ineligible to play in Europe next season.

The three to be relegated were deserving of it. All three were dreadful throughout the season, with even promoted trio Konyaspor, Erciyesspor and Rizespor doing really well! The new three to be promoted are two well known teams who have come back up first time around – Mersin and Istanbul. The third is Balikersirspor, who have not been in the top flight for 38 years. Welcome back!!

Top Scorers:

  1. Aatif Chahechouhe – 17
  2. Burak Yilmaz – 16
  3. Ezequiel Scarione – 15
  4. Moussa Sow – 15

  1. Cicinho – 14
  2. C Erkin – 10
  3. T Viudez – 10
  4. Theofanis Gekas – 8

Hopefully all teams will behave financially and have learnt their lesson – do not attempt to match fix! The problem is in the smaller league is that pay is so low some see it as a way to make a quick buck, but do not think of the consequences either for them or their team. It’s a decent league, lets hope this time next year we are talking about it for good reasons, not bad!
