The USA came into this tournament as the best qualifying team – they finished top of both of their groups, the 3rd and 4th phases. Despite this – Coach Jurgen Klinsmann can’t seem to make his mind up on their formation – switching between a 4-4-2 (Basic and Diamond) and a 4-2-3-1, making it a little hard for us to decide their probable team…
GK’s: Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Nick Rimando
DF’s: DaMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Omar Gonzalez, Fabian Johnson, DeAndre Yedlin
MF’s: Kyle Beckerman, Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Brad Davis, Mix Diskerud, Julian Green, Jermaine Jones, Graham Zusi
FW’s: Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Aron Johannsson, Chris Wondolowski
Coach – Jurgen Klinsmann
Missing – Landon Donavon – with over 50 goals in 150 games, it was widely expected he would make the cut, but due to fitness and the fact he is getting on, and younger, fitter players are available, he was cut from the 30 man squad.
As mentioned – they came through Qualifying with flying colours, topping both groups, winning a combined 11 games from 16.
Ones to Watch:
Graham Zusi – it has been quite a year for this man – his first full season, he scored 5 goals and had around 7 assists. A quick winger – he scored two goals in the qualifying stages, and begun to stake a claim for a starting spot permanently. Good little player, we hope to see him start!
Jermaine Jones – the heartbeat of the team, along with Michael Bradley. He is key to any slim chances of qualifying, or even grabbing a few points. Solid player who has been in Germany for years, playing his trade.
Julian Green – Currently at Bayern Munich II, the young German switched nationalities to the delight of Klinsmann. He may not start, but he is a star for the future, and may get a start if there is nothing to play for in the final game.
(4-4-2 / 4-2-3-1): Guzan, Besler, Cameron, Chandler, Johnson, Beckerman, Jones, Bradley, Zusi, Altidore, Dempsey.
As stated earlier – the formation is in constant flux. Dempsey could drop off Altidore, and the two Wingers push up, leaving Jones and Bradley behind sitting in front of the back 4.
Group Winner – 10/1
To Qualify – 3/1
Stage of Elimination: Group Stage – 1/7
Under 2.5 Points – Evens
With Portugal, Germany and Ghana in their group – we are 99.6% sure they are going home. No doubt they have a lot of quality, but those three have more. They could lose all three games, and with that in mind our Top Tip is Under 2.5 Points at Evens!
