Having done my previews (one to go…just needs typing) and have had a look at the antepost markets (pre-tournament betting, for those who do not know what it means). I’m looking at the Winner of the league, promotion, top 6, 7 or 10 and relegation – not forgetting top scorer:
1. Derby Win (Championship) @ 11/2 – with their squad – I can’t see another winner. Ince and Bent hit double figures in just 15 and 18 games last season while on loan, while there are others there who are capable of the same.
2. Sheff Utd Win (League One) @ 9/2 – same as Derby, they have the best looking, deep squad in the league. Plenty of goalscorers and an excellent midfield and defence. 9/2 favourites, but for a reason.
3. Notts County Win (League 2) @ 16/1 – They are about 5th favourite, but in my eyes Portsmouth are massively overpriced – they were favourite last season and ended up 16th. County have a quality squad and manager, so I fancy them to win the division at big odds!
I’ve gone for the same two teams from Championship and League One – with them being 7/4 and 7/4. In the League Two, I have chosen Luton @ 7/4 – with their all-round quality squad and now Mackail-Smith up front, they should be a front runner. In the Conference, I fancy Grimsby @ 2/1 – Barnet and Bristol Rovers were so good last season nobody really gave them a chance, and they were in the playoffs but eventually lost. I think they will return this time.
Top 6, 7 or 10: 70/1
Premier League: Newcastle (Top 10) @ 5/2 – with a fully fit Siem de Jong, and additions of Mitrovic, Wijnaldum and Mbemba – as well as Rolando Aarons looking very handy – I fancy Newcastle to do quite well this season. In Daryl Janmaat, Tim Krul, Coloccini and then the likes of Anita and Colback in and around the defensive 3rd – and McClaren changing the philosophy which the players are buying into it. Top 10 looks great value @ 5/2
Championship: Wolves Top 6) @ 13/8 – Wolves have two top forwards in Afobe (13 in 21) and Dicko (14 in 35) – they have two in-form strikers. They may have lost Bakary Sako, but added Conor Coady who looks a good performer, and Le Fondre on loan, as well as Sheyi Ojo on loan from Liverpool. I think they will do well this season, and push for promotion.
League One: Peterborough (Top 6) @ 7/4 – Peterborough have one of the top squads in the league, with new players complimenting old ones. In Washington, Vassell, Gormley – they have three excellent strikers. Jon Taylor and Marcus Maddison in midfield, and an all-round strong squad – they seem to be a little overpriced in my opinion. 7/4 for top 6 is great value
League Two: Notts County (Top 7) @ 7/4 – Already spoken plenty about them. Loads of experienced international players along with some good younger ones from Premier League teams. I like them a lot – and think they will minimum get top 7. Great odds @ 7/4
Premier League: Norwich @ 6/5 – their squad lacks a scorer, and in defence looks a bit frail. They may have got away with a lot in the Championship, but they will not get so lucky in this league. I think they will get a few hammerings and go straight back down. 6/5 good value.
Championship: Rotherham @ 13/8 – Last season they just avoided it, but with the three teams coming up of good quality, they will struggle. They have lost a lot of players and brought in nobody good enough to individually save them.
League One: Colchester @ Evens – Worst team in the league by far. No real scorer in the team, and a defence that leaks. Easily my best pick for that league.
League Two: Accrington Stanley @ 7/2 – Poor squad, average manager and very likely to struggle unless there is a miracle.
Top Goalscorers: 35,000/1
Christian Beneke @ 16/1 – He has played for a poor Villa side for 3 seasons and bagged 49 in 100 games – and with even better service he will score for fun. Aguero always gets injured, Rooney will be close – Costa (see Aguero, fitness issues + hot headed) – this looks a good bet for me!
Benik Afobe @ 9/1 – again, he may be the favourite but he seems to be getting better and betting. 19 in 32 for MK Dons, 13 in 21 for Wolves once signed in January. Top scorer in England last season – and should be up there again this season.
Billy Sharp @ 7/1 – he maybe the favourite, but you see why. He has scored tonnes of goals at Championship level for the last 10 years, so should score plenty in this league.
Tom Nichols @ 25/1 – Nichols scored 17 in 39 for Exeter last season, and although they won’t be up there in terms of playoffs or promotion – but he is only young and getting better. A lot of the favourites like Tubbs, Mackail-Smith, Richardsm Hylton etc are all fairly old. Exeter should be top 10ish
Those are my picks – you could probably make some good accumulators out of those, but I have quoted the Bet365 price for each one!
Best of luck
