2016 Summer Transfers: Part 1 – England

We are now into the first part of the transfer window – and with the Euro’s still ongoing, a few deals are being held up as players are still with the national teams. However, many are starting to flow – and there have been some impressive ones all around Europe!

Further Inflation of British Players?

To start with, once again – it seems the price of English/British players is going up once again. Today brought news that Bournemouth have had a bid of £15m accepted for Jordan Ibe, a young winger who has only played 60 or 70 first team games for Liverpool and a mix of loan spells in the lower leagues. You also have Leicester bidding £18m for Michael Keane, a player sold to Burnley for £3m last summer. Watford have knocked back bids of around £30m for Troy Deeney, while Palace paid £10m for James Tomkins – the most average of centre halves!

There have been some good deals however – Newcastle signed both Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie for around £10m each, Andros Townsend moved for £13m. Nathan Redmond swapped Norwich for Southampton for around £11m and Matt Phillips has gone to WBA for £5.5m.

Bargains of the Summer

Despite the rise of big money transfers, there have been some bargains. Middlesbrough have signed Viktor Fischer for around £4m, while Watford have bagged Liverpool starlet Jerome Sinclair for around the same amount. West Ham have brought in Algerian flyer Sofiane Feghouli on a free transfer. Liverpool signed Joel Matip on a free, while also signed German keeper Loris Karius for around £5m. Another keeper, Matz Sels – a highly rated Belgian keeper – has signed for Newcastle for around the same amount.

Spurs have signed Victor Wanyama for around the £11m mark – mainly thanks to him being in the last year of his contract. Nolito has moved to Man City for £13.8m – a relative bargain in the grand scheme of things! Steve Mandanda has moved to Palace on a free transfer, while Ibrahimovic, even at 35 – is a good signing for Man Utd. Nampayls Mendy was a key member of the Nice squad that secured 4th place in the French top division, and has moved to Leicester for £13m. Kemar Roofe has also made quick work in moving back up the leagues – signing for Leeds for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £3m.

Big Money Deals

These have been few and far between so far – but one could be set to stun the world. Paul Pogba could soon move back to Man Utd for a reported £100m! Apart from that, there have been a couple of biggies. Michy Batshuayi has cost Chelsea £33m, Granit Xhaka has moved to Arsenal for £35m, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has gone to Man Utd for around £27m, and Ilkay Gundogan has joined Man City for £20m.

Between Premier League clubs – Sadio Mane has joined Liverpool from Southampton for £36m. Further down the league, Watford have spent £12m on Isaac Success, while Middlesbrough have signed Bologna midfielder Marten de Roon for £12m. As previously mentioned – Newcastle signed Ritchie and Gayle for £10m apiece, Southampton snared Redmond for £11m and Palace grabbed Townsend and Tomkins for over £10m each.

Officially only a few days into the window, and I’d say the best part of £250m has been spent in the top two tiers, and with Pogba looking likely to move to Old Trafford, Moussa Sissoko potentially going to Liverpool for £21m and Ibe to Bournemouth for £15m – it could soon be £400m!
