Last weekend finished with a decent record of 3 from 4 on our picks. So close to a 13/1 clean sweep as well, with only a costly late fumble from the Eagles when driving for the decisive score being the heartbreaker. Hopefully a perfect record in week 6 with three games that catch my eye.
Carolina Panthers –2.5 @ 5/6 vs New Orleans Saints (6pm)
Yes the Panthers have been awful this season and we’ve already been burned on them once a few weeks ago but I’m happy to give them another chance in week 6. With both these sides having only one victory apiece up until this point this really has a feel of an NFC South elimination game!
Looking at Carolinas defeats, 3 of the 4 have come against the Broncos, Viking and Falcons, among the most impressive NFL teams so far this season. Contrast this with the Saints who would be still without a victory were it not for the Chargers gifting them a win they did not deserve. The Saints do have a potent offence and Carolina has struggled on D this season but they signs were there last Monday that they have made the necessary adjustments. They’ll receive a significant boost here with last season’s MVP Cam Newton and Jonathon Stewart returning from injury and are a good pick minus the three considering just how desperately they need the victory.
Pittsburgh Steelers –7.5 @ 21/20 vs Miami Dolphins (NAP – 6pm)
I always say it never a good idea to back road favourites by more than a touchdown but as was the case with New England in Cleveland last weekend this one is just too good to refuse. The sole Dolphins victory this season has come in overtime against the winless Browns while in to two subsequent games since they have lost by double digits. Their defence looks atrocious while the offensive line cannot protect Quarterback Ryan Tannehill who was sacked 6 times last weekend and their running game seems nonexistent.
This all spells bad news considering the opponents this week are the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is on a hot streak having thrown for 9 TDs and 0 interceptions over his last two games and have big targets in Antonio Brown and Sammy Coates. Running back Le’Veon Bell is still finding his rhythm after returning from suspension but should be line for a massive outing against a Dolphins defence that can’t stop the run. The Steelers have covered 5 of the last 6 times when favoured by more than a touchdown and should march to another double-digit victory here.
Philadelphia Eagles -2.5 @ 20/23 vs Washington Redskins (6pm)
The Eagles looked a little rusty last weekend coming off their bye week and letting us down for a 4 timer. That said while the level of their performance wasn’t that of their opening three victories they still would have come away with the win was it not for that late fumble. Rookie QB Carson Wentz has played incredibly well while the defence has been one of the surprises of the season.
Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has not looked quite as good but has managed to lead his side to 3 straight victories despite his side generating very little in the running game. However without a big target in his TE Jordan Reed who misses this with a concussion I think that without generating some turnovers they will struggle to keep pace with the Eagles scoring.
The preferred double is the Steelers/Panthers at odds of close to 3/1 while adding the Eagles makes for a 6/1 treble. For those looking for a 4th pick to add my suggestion would be the Jaguars plus 1.5 against the Chicago Bears. They are clearly the team with more talent on their roster and are fresh off their bye week. The fact that they are getting points should be considered a bonus!
Best of luck.
