2 Groups down, 6 to go!
Next up, Group C – which contains France, Denmark, Peru and Australia.
Possibly one of the toughest to call, with France the likely winners but Denmark and Peru very closely matched.
Anyway – let’s get into it:
France will win this group, no questions asked. There are probably 23 sat at home now that could win this group that were omitted by France! When you can leave the likes of Rabiot, Lacazette, Benzema, Martial, Digne, Kurzawa, Costil and Aymeric Laporte…you know you’ve got a fantastic squad!
Australia should get rolled over, and even though Peru and Denmark are potential banana skins, I think all 3 games will be won by France, which is currently available @ 13/8.
After the Group Stage – for me, they will get to at least the Semi-Finals, and are potentially a dark horse to win.
Denmark have a very handy squad. Beneath the stars like Christian Eriksen, there are some very handy, yet underrated players such as Thomas Delaney, Pione Sisto and Nicolai Jorgensen. Add in some of the higher rated players like Kaspar Dolberg, Kasper Schmeichel and Anders Christensen – and you have a severely talented team.
Defensively sound – but offensively sometimes far too reliant on Eriksen. In Poulsen, Jorgensen, Dolberg, Braithwaite and Cornelius – you have some hard workers, but clinical? Maybe only Jorgensen.
If they are to progress, the strikers will have to step up.
Unbeaten in over 10 games, and their first World Cup since 1982. Gareca has restored their short-passing, free-flowing football over the past 3 years and for me they could pounce on Denmark’s lack of bite.
With players such as the returning Paolo Guerrero, who has had his ban suspended, Jefferson Farfan and a man Watford will be familiar with – Andre Carrillo, they have plenty of forward thinking players. Luis Advincula is a very pacey right back who will look to get forward, while Raul Ruidaz is a player I also admire.
Bar the few mentioned, there are not a lot of household names – but I really think this side will light up Russia, and stun Denmark.
Could really be the whipping boys of this group, given the strength of France, Peru and Denmark. They have an ageing team without any up and coming stars.
There are some household names – Tim Cahill is 39 soon and hasn’t managed more than 25 minutes for a long time, but with Bert van Marwijk at the helm, you can be sure they will try and be tough to crack whilst good on the counter attack.
Mat Ryan is a handy keeper, while the likes of Massimo Luongo, Mile Jedinak, Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Robbie Kruse are decent players.
Group Forecast: 1: France / 2: Peru @ 10/3
Excellent Value: Peru Over 3.5 Points @ 11/10
High Value: France/Peru To Qualify @ 5/2
Banker: Australia Finish Bottom @ 4/5
